POP-TENT & TOM HANKS (2020.02.25)

(Film) A BEAUTIFUL DAY in the NEIGHBORHOOD and “POP-TENT”

The 1955 “POP-TENT” designed by Bill Moss appears in the 2019 film A BEAUTIFUL DAY in the NEIGHBORHOOD, starring Tom Hanks.

The film is based on the beloved children’s TV program “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” (1968–2001), hosted by Fred McFeely Rogers. Within the nostalgic depiction of mid-century American family life, the “POP-TENT” appears as a coveted camping item for families. The tent symbolically represents the rapid spread of outdoor culture among American families during the rise of motorization in the 1960s.

Bill Moss’s innovative “POP-TENT” and “PARAWING” transformed camping into an accessible leisure activity, carried easily on station wagons for spontaneous family adventures.
